In the fourth, explaining the bhikṣu, regarding the 'mendicant bhikṣu' there are two explanations. One says that it means begging for sustenance in accordance with the teaching, abandoning wrong livelihood. The second says that it refers to constantly begging, begging for almsfood, and so forth. Regarding 'self-proclaimed', it refers to contemporary precept-breaking monks and the like who claim of themselves, 'I am a bhikṣu'; or perhaps those who have not yet received full ordination and claim of themselves, 'I am a fully ordained monk'—the Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya explains that self-proclamation is called 'living as a thief'. Those who have personally removed beard and hair and donned Dharma robes are 'nominal and conceptual bhikṣus'. When one has shaved off beard and hair but not yet received the precepts, one has only the name and concept of a bhikṣu without yet having the precepts. Vinaya Master Shou says: 'Nominal and conceptual bhikṣu' refers to what the Nirvāṇa Sūtra explains: a śrāmaṇera who has not yet received the ten precepts but is counted among the Saṃgha. As for 'destroyer of afflictions', it is as the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya explains: the bhikṣu who destroys the fetters.
