The four phrases beginning with 'If the basis for death' correspond in order to the four Māras, such as the aggregates (skandha-māra). The phrase 'due to affliction, future birth is brought about, and having been born, there is untimely demise' applies generally to afflictions among the ten causes of past and present bringing about future saṃsāra, omitting past already-deceased and present currently-dying affliction-causes and conditions existing in previous lives, and so forth. 'The exhaustion of the life of sentient beings is the intrinsic nature of death'—this statement also applies generally to the intrinsic nature of past death, present death, and future death.
