The two causes are: first, the drawing cause (ākṣepaka-hetu); second, the generating cause (abhinivartaka-hetu). As for the drawing cause, it refers to 'in the two realms, up to the seeds of contact and feeling': because of delusion regarding the previously explained two kinds of fruition, ignorance arises; ignorance initiates karmic formations; karmic formations can draw out the nominal seeds of consciousness; nominal seeds can further draw out the seeds of name-and-form; the seeds of name-and-form further draw out the seeds of the six sense bases; the seeds of the six sense bases further draw out the seeds of contact; the seeds of contact further draw out the seeds of the feeling branch. In this way, among the seven branches, the prior draws out the subsequent.
