The meaning is: Earlier, when the attention on the characteristic of clarity is a single wholesome mind taking a single object as condition, because of being alternated with and sharing the object with [the wisdom arisen from] hearing and reflection, it brings about resolve that is exclusively wholesome upon arising; when taking each single object, it is not alternated with hearing and reflection, and is exclusively in meditative concentration. Distinguishing it from that [attention on the characteristic of] clarity, it is therefore said to be 'exclusively'. This is spoken with respect to remaining for a long time in the single contemplation of a wholesome mind; it does not mean there is no emerging from contemplation to give rise to pride, regression, generating the remaining afflictions, and so forth. It does not intend to clarify the subduing of pride, and in reality pride is obtained in the treatise; hence it says 'occurs with and without intervals'. Now, because resolve is distinguished from clarity, it refers to remaining in contemplation for a long time, unlike clarity which, being interrupted by hearing and reflection, cannot enter contemplation for a long time. Saying 'exclusively' is not a contradiction.
