Regarding "He also accomplishes numerous signs and characteristics": this clarifies that one who enters the path of seeing has twelve signs and characteristics. First, by realizing contemplation of reality, one attains four cognitions: 1. the cognition of phenomena only—meaning that when an ordinary person, one falsely conceptualized a real self, but now upon entering the path of seeing, the real self is eliminated and only phenomena exist; 2. the cognition of non-annihilation; 3. the cognition of non-permanence (in the text "non-learning" [fei xue] is an error for "non-permanence" [fei chang]), meaning that when an ordinary person, one falsely conceptualized annihilation and permanence, but now upon entering the path of seeing, one is separated from the conceptualization of annihilation and permanence, which is the cognition of non-annihilation and non-permanence, this being stated in terms of the view of annihilation abandoned by seeing, without speaking of that abandoned by cultivation; 4. the cognition of conditioned arising being like an illusion—meaning that when an ordinary person, one falsely generated wrong views, grasping at views, and grasping at precepts and vows, but now upon entering the path of seeing, due to correct investigation one observes that all phenomena arise from conditions like illusions, without the things conceptualized by those three views and so forth. This is the first sign.
