Regarding the path, (Jing says:) this directly explains cultivating practice to enter nobility. In the preliminary path of preparation, the first kind of person cultivates skill regarding the aggregates and so forth for a hundred kalpas; when the hundred kalpas are complete, in the final existence, having suppressed the afflictions of cultivation up to the stage of nothingness, and relying on the fourth dhyāna, gives rise to the contemplation of impurity up to culmination; this person attains the latter two fruits. The second is also an innate pratyekabuddha; encountering a Buddha, generating the mind, and cultivating the path over many lifetimes, up to being able to produce the three wholesome roots of causes, vehicles, and intentions, they are still unable to enter nobility; merely cultivating skill regarding the aggregates and so forth, their life then ends; in a subsequent rebirth, having suppressed and severed the afflictions of cultivation up to the stage of nothingness, relying on whichever among the five stages, they enter the direct realization of the truths, leaping over to realize non-returning, and only after severing afflictions attain arhatship; or at times, this person dies while abiding in the first three wholesome roots, takes rebirth, gives rise to patience and so on in that subsequent body, enters the direct realization of the truths, and having attained the first fruit, comprehensively severs the afflictions of cultivation of the nine stages and leaps over to realize arhatship. The third is also an innate pratyekabuddha; encountering a Buddha, generating the mind, cultivating the path of preparation up to entering nobility and realizing direct comprehension of dharmas, they attain the first fruit of training or realize the second, but being unable to extinguish taints, their life then ends; they either take seven births or become a once-returner, and in an era without Buddhas, relying on the body of the second fruit, they do not take non-returning but leap over to realize arhatship. These latter two persons are both "group-farers"; at minimum no less than four births, at maximum no more than a hundred kalpas, because they are inferior to the first person. The intention of this second division is to clarify that the three kinds of pratyekabuddhas initially begin by generating the mind and cultivating the path of preparation.
