(Ji says:) The first, when first generating the mind, encounters a Buddha and cultivates for a hundred kalpas, already becoming a rhinoceros-horn. Now the treatise separately says that having passed through a hundred kalpas, they encounter a Buddha's era. Another explanation: although cultivating for a hundred kalpas, they did not cultivate skill regarding the aggregates and so forth; having passed through a hundred kalpas, they encounter a Buddha's era and only then cultivate skill regarding the aggregates, and in the final body attain the path as a rhinoceros-horn. In the second path, they first encounter a Buddha who preaches the Dharma to them, and they cultivate for less than a hundred kalpas—cultivating for ninety kalpas, or even down to one kalpa; in stages such as heat, they cultivate skill regarding the aggregates and so forth, but in this body they cannot realize the ultimate fruit, either realizing the first fruit, or becoming a kulankula, seven-births, once-returner, one-interval, and so forth, and in a subsequent body obtain the pratyekabuddha fruit. In the third path, having encountered a Buddha and cultivated, they attain the first fruit in this body, or the fruits of seven-births, kulankula, one-interval, once-returner, and so forth; later they cultivate skill regarding the aggregates and so forth, and in a future lifetime realize the unlearnable fruit of a pratyekabuddha.
