Briefly explaining the meaning of the two gotras, there are five portals: First, distinguishing the essence. In the Western regions there are three accounts. According to what Jayasena stated: There is no separate essence of gotra; it is only that within that person's stream the two kinds of hindrances have the property of being severable, which is established as the gotra abiding in original nature. Later, when encountering good spiritual friends, hearing the Dharma, resolving the mind, seeking awakening, and so forth, prior to the stages four perfumings of hearing are cultivated and formed: first, from the wholesome conditioned roots conducive to merit, one gradually cultivates to form the factors of the path; as the factors of the path are gradually cultivated and increase, they perfume and form taintless seeds, which are called the cultivated gotra. Then non-conceptual wisdom and the like arise.
