Tai said: On 'the excellence of the six bases', he recounted six accounts from the Western regions: One says: attached to the six bases, there are the excellent functions of taintless seeds, which are subsumed under the six bases. Second says: seeds of the two hindrances are attached to the six bases and subsumed under the six bases; these seeds of the two hindrances must be severable, and are therefore called excellent. These two explanations rely on the adaptable doctrinal gate (anuvṛtti-nīti); if discussed according to the authentic doctrinal gate, it is only within the sixth base that there are taintless seeds, or the meaning that the two hindrances are severable, and it generally says 'six bases' in terms of the general enumeration. Third says: among the six bases there is an excellent base, namely the mental base; within the mental base, that which is excellent is the sixth mind; within the sixth mind, that which is excellent is the taintless seeds, or the severability of the seeds of the two hindrances—this takes the function by mentioning the essence. Fourth says: the eighth consciousness has the objective aspect and subjective aspect; the five bases such as the eye are the objective aspect, and the subjective aspect of the ālaya is the sixth base among them; these six bases are all the objective and subjective aspects of the root consciousness; within the self-substance aspect upon which these objective and subjective aspects rely, there are the excellent functions of taintless seeds, or the function of the severability of the seeds of the two hindrances—this demonstrates the excellent functions present within the essence by mentioning the aspects. Fifth says: within the eighth consciousness there are fully present the excellent functions of the seeds of the taintless six bases such as the eye, and there are also the taintless seeds of the six bases such as form; this speaks according to the predominant, merely saying 'six bases' and not saying 'twelve bases'. Sixth says: there truly exist taintless seeds of the twelve bases, but because they do not exceed six, it merely says 'six', like the saptaparṇa tree. The masters of the Western regions mostly maintained differences, taking the originally existent taintless seeds as the excellence.
