Second, in taking on subsequent rebirths, one's body is free of grave illness. Jing says: 'To explain rebirth generally, there are three kinds: First, bound by karma in the three realms, meaning that prior to the ten faiths, one takes birth in the three realms bound by karma, with no autonomy over the length of one's lifespan. Second, not bound by karma in the three realms, meaning that from the ten faiths onward, the discontinuous embodiment taken by suddenly-awakened bodhisattvas up to the seventh stage allows autonomy in accepting or relinquishing; hence it is called "not bound by karma." Third, transformation in the three realms: if a suddenly-awakened bodhisattva takes untainted wisdom as a condition and vows to retain this body for three asaṃkhyeya kalpas without extinguishing, it is called a body of transformation; gradually-awakened bodhisattvas, like arhats who redirect their minds to enter the Great [Vehicle], from the ten faiths onward up to the tenth stage only take on transformation bodies, and if they wish to be born by transformation, they simply manifest an apparitional body among the same kind to transform beings.'
