Third, explaining mutual subsumption in relation to the five stages of dwelling: the five stages of dwelling are: 1. the stage of the single dwelling of view; 2. the stage of the dwelling of sensual attachment; 3. the stage of the dwelling of form attachment; 4. the stage of the dwelling of formless attachment; 5. the stage of the dwelling of ignorance. The first three discriminations are subsumed under the stage of the dwelling of ignorance. As for the two discriminations of self and what belongs to self, there are two kinds: if they arise conceptually, they are subsumed under the stage of the single dwelling of view; if innate, the self-view pervades the three stages because it is severed in the path of cultivation. Among the last three discriminations, disagreeable discrimination is subsumed solely under sensual attachment; the other two discriminations pervade the three stages of attachment. This approach analyzes subsumption temporarily according to the doctrine of the masters who take the twofold clinging, etc., as the essential nature of the eight discriminations, and not according to the masters who take expedient, non-obscuring indeterminate wisdom as the essential nature.
