云何上地有自性分別等體？解云：尋伺是假，若思若慧為其自性，若據用唯在下地，若據實體上地通，故八分別遍通諸地。又尋伺地云：尋伺分別若望出世無漏無分別智，三界心法皆是分別。據此文說，尋思分別即有通別，別名尋伺唯在下地，通名尋伺上地亦有。

How can the higher stages have an essence of conceptualisation of intrinsic nature and so on? The explanation says: Investigation and reflection are designated nominally; either volition (cetanā) or wisdom (prajñā) is their intrinsic nature. In terms of function, they are only in the lower stages, but in terms of real essence, they extend to the higher stages; therefore, the eight conceptualisations pervade all stages. Moreover, the Stage with Investigation and Reflection states: if investigation, reflection, and conceptualisation are viewed from the perspective of supramundane, taintless, non-conceptual wisdom, all mental dharmas of the three realms are conceptualisations. According to this text, investigation and conceptualisation have both a general and a specific sense: specifically named 'investigation and reflection', they exist only in the lower stages; generally named 'investigation and reflection', they also exist in the higher stages.
