3. Explaining the hindrances to be remedied: the first five supernormal knowledges fully possess two hindrances, essential and operational. "Essential" refers to the afflictions and secondary afflictions of lower planes, such as the desire realm, obstructing the essential nature of the five supernormal knowledges belonging to the higher meditative planes so that they cannot be accomplished; this is called the essential hindrance. Although the essential hindrance is removed and the five supernormal knowledges are accomplished, there still remains the blockage of fundamental ignorance preventing their active manifestation; this is called the operational hindrance. The operational hindrance is none other than the cognitive hindrance, subsumed under the category of karmic maturation; once this operational hindrance is removed, the function of supernormal knowledge is realized. The supernormal knowledge of the exhaustion of taints has only the essential hindrance; if the essential hindrance is removed, one immediately attains the exhaustion of taints. Persons of the two vehicles sever both hindrances completely before giving rise to the supernormal knowledges. Ordinary beings, heterodox practitioners, and bodhisattvas before the stages suppress the essential and operational hindrances to give rise to the five supernormal knowledges. Bodhisattvas on the ten stages merely suppress the essential hindrance and sever the operational hindrance to give rise to the supernormal knowledges; because that operational [hindrance] is subsumed under the cognitive hindrance, upon realizing the principle of tathatā and severing the cognitive hindrance, they immediately give rise to the functions of the supernormal knowledges. The essential hindrance consists of the afflictions severed through cultivation. Up to the seventh stage, although coarse defilements of the upper and middle grades are suppressed, subtle defilements can still temporarily operate; only on the eighth stage and above are subtle ones suppressed, and they are severed all at once at the vajropama-samādhi. Therefore we know that for bodhisattvas on the ten stages, the essential hindrances to the five supernormal knowledges are merely suppressed and not severed. The Buddhas' six supernormal knowledges operate spontaneously without further eliminating hindrances, because at the vajropama-mind all hindrances to the six supernormal knowledges have already been severed all at once.
