9.356

今三藏云：是師子國人語，無有上下次第文章，出語音誦呪令人不解。又解：是南天竺本造仙人名。今現成國，皆從仙人立名，即是長年婆羅門是彼國人也。

Now the Master of the Tripiṭaka says: It is the speech of the people of the Siṃhala kingdom, having no hierarchical order or composition; uttering sounds and chanting mantras, it causes people not to understand. Another interpretation says: It is the name of the ṛṣi who originally founded South India. Now existing as a state, it is entirely named after the ṛṣi; that is, the long-lived brahmins are people of that country.
