Within the second individual explanation, giving has four characteristics. The scribe of the older Bodhisattvabhūmi made an error: in the second characteristic, he only explained it as the provisions for bodhi, and inserted the condition of gathering and maturing others through that giving into the third characteristic. Thus that treatise says: "First, giving counteracts stinginess; second, it constitutes the equipment for bodhi; third, gathering and maturing sentient beings through giving, desiring to give with a wholesome mind and giving with a pure mind, having given and not regretting, rejoicing at the three times so as to benefit oneself—this is called gathering oneself; causing those sentient beings to be entirely free from hunger, thirst, cold, heat, illness, needs, various hardships, and terrors, benefiting them through this—this is called gathering others; fourth, due to this cause and condition, wherever one is born, one obtains great wealth, obtains a great gotra, and obtains a great retinue." Following the previous error, the subsequent five perfections were also inconsistent; now they are set in order.
