Ji says: A lower-grade bodhisattva has actually already departed from the karma of the bad destinies and does not undergo rebirth in the bad destinies; however, for the sake of benefiting sentient beings, they deliberately go to be born there, and because of this, they give rise to defilement and undergo that retributive destiny. Thus, during the first kalpa, there are rebirths in the bad destinies. Just as a garuḍa enters the ocean to eat a dragon, and having eaten the dragon flies up into the sky, its feet become muddy because of capturing the dragon; actually, it had no intention to do so, its original purpose being to capture the dragon, but in capturing the dragon it consequently became stained with mud. The bodhisattva is also like this: because of benefiting sentient beings, they are consequently bound by defilements; thus, during the first kalpa, there are rebirths in the bad destinies. If so, as in the sūtra cited, if one accomplishes the worldly supreme grade of correct view, how does one resolve the verse?
