Tai says: One who does not cohabit is a person who has committed a grave offense. Regarding one who lives separately: above in explaining impairment of intention it says, 'Or fearing the Dharma of non-livelihood, pretending to distinguish oneself among monks as having the same Dharma with them, so that monks would not dwell together with me,' which is called living separately. The former takes impairment of intention; this takes the meaning of impairment of wholesome states. It can also be that a novice committing thirteen [offenses] also constitutes living in saṃghāvaśeṣa, where dwellings and bedding are called separate living. Although there are no saṃghāvaśeṣa offenses in the ten precepts, because throughout the extensive Vinaya all are applied to formulate offenses for novices, we know that there are also precepts.
