Next is distinguishing the four kinds of restoration of purity. Regarding "although the initial aggregate of offenses can be restored to purity, nevertheless it exists only in reliance on two kinds of persons, and so forth": Master Jing says: "This refers to Sudinna having sexual intercourse with his former wife, and again, in the forest there was a mendicant monk who had sexual intercourse with a female monkey. Because of this, the precept was formulated, extending to incurring a pārājika even with an animal, formulating the first grave precept. At the end, regarding 'there is no offense': at first the precept had not been formulated, or one was entangled by madness, mental confusion, or the torment of illness; hence it says that those whose initial aggregate [of offenses] is restored to purity are only these two persons." Master Da says: "First, those who committed it before the precept was formulated; second, those who committed it and are able to repent, namely, those who are training in repentance."
