Regarding the explanation of the text of the treatise: this treatise consists solely of the main exposition, having no introductory or concluding sections. Within the "Maulī Bhūmi", the main text is divided into two parts: first, questions and answers that state and enumerate the names of the seventeen bhūmis; second, subsequent separate expositions of the meanings of the seventeen bhūmis. However, because the text stating and enumerating them is brief, it is introduced at the beginning of the "Bhūmi of the Five Consciousnesses". It does not, simply because it is stated in this bhūmi, belong exclusively to the bhūmi of the collection of the five consciousnesses. The initial text has five parts: first, a question; second, an answer; third, an investigation; fourth, an exposition; fifth, a conclusion. Within the exposition there are two parts: the verses and the prose. If one follows the Vibhāṣā, it is divided into four textual parts: first, the general question and answer; second, the further investigation and raising; third, the enumeration of names; fourth, the general conclusion. The question raises three causes, but answers only with the seventeen. It explains the third part by investigating which seventeen they are, and interprets the verse text. The explanations of the specific names of the seventeen bhūmis are all as found in the Commentary on the Treatise.
