Following another has three [meanings]: first, it cannot arise of itself and revolves following the mind, as fully explained in the Viniścayasaṃgrahaṇī; second, it is not of itself wholesome or unwholesome, but is guided by the mind; third, it cannot initiate action of itself, but can only initiate actions following [the mind]. 'Capable of obtaining pleasant and unpleasant fruits' differs from schools such as the Mahāsāṃghika, for whom the five [consciousnesses] are exclusively neutral.
