Madness has five conditions. The fifteenth fascicle of the Kośa takes forgetfulness as its essence. That treatise says: Due to a disharmony of the great elements, the mind loses mindfulness, hence it takes forgetfulness as its essence, or it takes the concomitant mind and mental factors as its nature. Comparing madness with distraction yields four alternatives: (1) Mad but not distracted: a mad person's undefiled mind; (2) Distracted but not mad: a non-mad person's defiled mind; (3) Both: a mad person's defiled mind; (4) Neither: a non-mad person's undefiled mind. This occurs only in the desire realm; except for the Northern Continent (Uttarakuru), all five destinies have it. Beings of the Northern Continent have no torment, while the gods do have it. In the Hīnayāna, the Buddha may have it; in the Mahāyāna, it is not so, and it is also absent on the ten bhūmis.
