Regarding the third main section of the treatise, clarifying that cultivating the wisdom of emptiness is the expedient means for bodhi: this emptiness empties the imaginary nature; it is not like the emptiness of non-existence spoken of before. Furthermore, this line and three characters—"this very wisdom is what all bodhisattvas..."—summarily clarifies that the wisdom of cultivating emptiness is the expedient means for bodhi. Why? The two lines from "Because all bodhisattvas..." down to "bring to maturity the Buddha dharmas and all sentient beings" clarify that by possessing the wisdom of emptiness, one does not cling to saṃsāra. The line and four characters from "Furthermore, being able to truly understand saṃsāra..." to "deeply feel revulsion and detachment" clarify that within saṃsāra, one undergoes much saṃsāra to teach and transform sentient beings, and does not, through practices such as impermanence, feel revulsion and turn away from saṃsāra seeking to enter nirvāṇa; that is, one does not cling to nirvāṇa. Third, the four lines from "If bodhisattvas cannot truly understand saṃsāra, they cannot..." down to "cannot bring to maturity the Buddha dharmas and sentient beings" clarify that if one lacks wisdom, one enters deeply into saṃsāra and cannot mature the Buddha dharmas and sentient beings; if one possesses wisdom, one does not enter [into the defilements of] saṃsāra and is well able to mature the Buddha dharmas and sentient beings. Not entering saṃsāra distinguishes them from ordinary beings, for they do not, like ordinary beings, generate afflictions such as craving and enter saṃsāra; that the bodhisattva does not enter is precisely due to wisdom, constantly abiding in nirvāṇa. Fourth, the three lines and four characters from "If bodhisattvas, regarding saṃsāra, with practices of impermanence and so forth deeply feel revulsion and detachment..." down to "unsurpassed, perfect bodhi" clarify that the bodhisattva is not like the two vehicles who feel revulsion and turn away from saṃsāra to swiftly enter nirvāṇa because they lack compassion. The bodhisattva possesses compassion, teaches and transforms sentient beings, does not enter nirvāṇa, and constantly abides in saṃsāra; this explicitly distinguishes them from the two vehicles.
