The treatise states: "If speech arises following dharmas and matters, then with respect to those dharmas [...] up to [...] establishing numerous nominal designations to express and designate them": this reiterates the refutation of the external attachment. If they grasp that the name refers to the designated and the designated corresponds to the name, then since on one dharma there are many corresponding names, the denoted dharma ought to correspond to the numerous names and have numerous essences; but since the denoting names are many while the essence of the denoted dharma is one, we know that names are merely numerous expressions and designations nominally posited upon the dharma. Although the above clarifies that names are nominal designations upon dharmas, it is also not the case that all expressions and designations can definitively be found on a single dharma. For example, regarding a single blue color, although a nominal designation is established calling it "blue color," because it is a nominal designation one cannot also call it "yellow color"; one can only apply to a single dharma whatever nominal designation has been established. As with the eye and so forth, along with numerous [terms like] illuminating, discerning, guiding, and so on, one cannot establish other nominal designations such as the name "ear" to refer to the eye.
