Regarding the explanation in the treatise of the fifth of the eighteen transformations, 'transformation' [where it states]: 'If one gives rise to the superior resolution of water with respect to that earth, one immediately causes it to become water, truly and not otherwise,' and so forth: although the Buddhas possess supernatural powers, they cannot transform the five dusts, faculties, and so forth so as to make them into real faculties capable of seeing forms and so on; they resemble those five faculties, but are not real five faculties. Although earth, water, and so on are external sense fields, their substances are each distinct; how could one transform water into fire? It is only that the substance of water ceases and the substance of fire separately arises, wherein it can serve the function of transformation. Due to the Buddha's mighty power, he causes fire to also possess the nature of moisture, and takes this nature of moisture to be the very substance of fire. If changing one nature into another were to mean transforming insentient things into sentient natures, then there would be an increase or loss in the realm of sentient beings; therefore, essential natures cannot be transformed. Here, furthermore, the five dusts can be transformed.
