Regarding the treatise's explanation of correct contemplation, saying, "a bodhisattva, by means of these eight characteristics, can correctly cultivate practice," and so forth: what are called the eight characteristics? That is, from below the initial question, "How does a bodhisattva correctly contemplate the Dharma?" up to immediately above this text, there are two parts: first, correctly explaining the eight kinds; second, establishing the eight characteristics. From below the question down to "first one should stay far away from inconceivable matters and contemplate that Dharma" is the first characteristic; down to "without laxity" is the second; next, down to "observing with reasoning and subsequently penetrating" is the third; next, "deeply and truly having faith and understanding in even a small part of it" is the fourth; next, down to "relying only on its meaning and not relying on its phrasing" is the fifth; "knowing according to reality dark speech and great speech" is the sixth; "correctly being able to penetrate initial reflection" is the seventh; "having attained penetration, repeatedly cultivating mental engagement to make it firm" is the eighth—these are the eight characteristics. / Below "these bodhisattvas, due to being able to stay far away," there are eight occurrences of the word "due to," which further establish the previous eight meanings, as can be known by counting them.
