The treatise states: "It should be known that herein, the ten dharmas of giving and the rest are only fully realized after a long period of cultivation throughout three great asaṃkhyeya kalpas," and so forth: Herein there are three perfections (pāramitās): 1. perfection of time, referring to the three great kalpas; 2. perfection of substance, referring to knowing thusness in the cause, where because of defilement it is not yet manifested, whereas in the fruit it is distinctly manifested, hence it is named perfection; 3. perfection of bodhi, where the two vehicles are called the cause and do not complete the fruit, whereas great bodhi is named the perfection of the fruit. The Dharma Master also said: There are four, adding the perfection of roots of goodness, where the Mahāyāna roots of goodness surpass those of the two vehicles; therefore, the statement in this treatise, "surpassing the roots of goodness of all other śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas," is this. If so, then following this, the treatise text below only has the former three because roots of goodness are capable of obtaining the wonderful fruit, and does not take roots of goodness as [a separate perfection].
