The treatise says: "Furthermore, all these provisions for bodhi are briefly of two kinds, namely, either distant from bodhi or close to it." "Distant" means not yet having obtained the primary and secondary marks, which is before the stages; "close" means having obtained the marks, referring to having entered the stages and above. The reason this is known is that just prior to this, it explained that upon entering the bhūmi of pure superior resolve, the various primary and secondary marks are already obtained as maturation; hence we know that before the stages one does not obtain the actual fruit of the marks. Furthermore, the text at the end of this fascicle says: "Marks correspond to the gotra-bhūmi, existing only as seeds residing based on the body; on the adhimukticaryā-bhūmi, one cultivates their upāya; on the bhūmi of superior resolve, they are called 'obtained'; on the higher bhūmis, they are called 'purified'; on the Buddha-bhūmi, they obtain the supreme bhūmi of good purification of the marks."
