Herein, it generally explains that the aspirations of bodhisattvas who have entered the generation of the mind [of awakening] are of fifteen kinds, and so forth. Here it is broadly clarified; hence it is named the "Chapter on Higher Aspiration." As for "aspiration" (āśaya), it takes faith, desire, and resolute resolve (adhimokṣa) as its essence; because this aspiration is superior, it is called the "Chapter on Higher Aspiration." Why is this explained? One who wishes to practice the bodhisattva deeds cultivates them in reliance on each respective division; having given rise to their cultivation, it clarifies that the Dharma contains aspiration. Aspiration is longing and desire; therefore it is explained next. There is the word "higher," which seems to apply only to the bhūmis; yet relying on its supporting meaning, it also extends to before the bhūmis without contradiction.
