12.80

住者何義？即因十二住，能住所住。有為無為，菩薩住中，故名為住。此中廣明，故名〈住品〉。又何以後明者？增上意樂，三劫所希，現行行教生，自行成滿，以初發心終至極果，分位差別總有十三，菩薩住中，故次後明之也。第二持之第四品也，即持、相等十品中之第五品也。

What is the meaning of "abode" (vihāra)? It refers to the twelve abodes as causes, the ability to abide, and that which is abided in. In the conditioned and the unconditioned, the bodhisattva abides therein; hence it is called "abode." Herein it is broadly explained; hence it is named the "Chapter on Abodes." Furthermore, why is it explained next? Higher aspiration, longed for across three kalpas, generates practice and teaching in the present; one's own practice having been fulfilled, from the initial generation of the mind up to the ultimate fruit, there are thirteen stages in total. The bodhisattva abides therein; therefore it is explained next. It is the fourth chapter of the second Ādhāra, namely the fifth chapter among the ten chapters including the Ādhāra and Characteristics.
