The treatise says: "Furthermore, regarding the two conditions that the evolving consciousnesses provide for the ālaya, where it states that in the present life they nourish its seeds, this means that just as when the wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate evolving consciousnesses evolve based upon the ālayavijñāna, in this very way, in the same support, they arise together and perish together, perfuming the ālaya..." and so on. Here, the school holding that the perfumed seed arises and perishes simultaneously takes this passage as definitive. The school holding that they arise at different times says regarding this passage: "This means that the active perfuming consciousness arises and perishes simultaneously with the eighth consciousness, perfuming the eighth, but not that the active consciousness arises and perishes simultaneously with the seed." There are two disputes regarding this: One school says that in the first volume, the fifth scroll, regarding the seven characteristics of seeds, it says that if generating a different category, it arises in that very thought-moment; if generating its own category, it does not arise in that very kṣaṇa. Therefore we know that active consciousness in relation to seed, and seed in relation to active consciousness, is of its own category and arises in a different thought-moment. If so, how to explain the six characteristics of seeds where they perish moment by moment and co-exist? The explanation says: This only refers to co-existent arising and perishing, not to arising together and perishing together within that very kṣaṇa. Another school says that when seeds produce active dharmas and active dharmas produce seeds, it must be simultaneous, as in the definition of seeds and this treatise's text, and as in the passage on the seven characteristics of seeds in the fifth scroll and elsewhere. What is termed "its own category" refers to its own seed category. Seed producing seed is mutual production within its own category, and therefore it is not in that very kṣaṇa. When a seed is viewed in relation to an active dharma, it is called a different category, and this is in that very kṣaṇa. Moreover, old seeds viewed in relation to new seeds also have a different category, which is in that very kṣaṇa. Therefore, according to these two explanations, their interpretations of this passage differ.
