Regarding the treatise's statement, 'What is the function of contact? It has the function of serving as the basis for feeling, perception, and volition,' why does it say in other places, such as the Abhidharma, that it is exclusively the basis of feeling, and not mention perception, volition, and the like? The difference between this and that is: here it is discussed generally, all relying upon contact, because contact arises immediately after manaskāra. If based on following and conforming, although it is strictly feeling alone, this [general statement] here does not serve as an exception to that, does it? This is as explained in the first fascicle of the Kośa. Regarding 'What is the function of feeling? It has the function of serving as the basis for the arising of craving,' this means that cravings for objects and the like all arise only subsequent to feeling.
