The treatise says: "Why is neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling stated to be mutually contrasted with ignorance?" and so forth. This means that equanimous feeling is the companion to all feelings, and ignorance is the companion to all afflictions; feeling serves as companion to feeling, and affliction serves as companion to affliction, and thus they are mutually contrasted. Furthermore, feeling and ignorance can both serve as companions to feelings and afflictions, and therefore the two are stated in mutual contrast. By this passage it is proven that in the fourth dhyāna, equanimous feeling overshadows the factor of correct discernment, and so [the latter] is not established as a separate factor.
