The treatise says: "The ten afflictions, such as greed, can all generate karma. Only if they are fierce and active do they generate karma for the bad destinies, not those acting through loss of mindfulness. Furthermore, those arising through discrimination can generate this karma, not those arising spontaneously." This applies across both seeing and cultivation. In the path of seeing, since the desire realm is exclusively unwholesome, they can all generate karma; in the path of cultivation, as Fascicle Four of the Abhidharma-samuccaya says, those that spontaneously generate evil conduct are unwholesome, while among the view of self and so on, some cannot. Hence the path of seeing is called discriminative affliction. As Fascicle Four of the Abhidharma-samuccaya explains, only these generate karma for the three bad destinies, not the path of cultivation. However, this is discussed here in terms of projecting fruitions versus fulfilling fruitions: in the path of cultivation, what is there to prevent the generation of karma for the individual fruitions of the bad destinies? Thus we know that this is based on projecting fruitions, not fulfilling fruitions. The rest is as explained in the commentaries on Fascicle Four of the Abhidharma-samuccaya and Fascicle One of the Maulī Bhūmi.
