In the category of nominal versus real, regarding 'either seventeen or twelve': seventeen means excluding the mind element, because the text below states that 'six are made into one', meaning that the immediate cessation of the six consciousnesses constitutes the one mind [element]; twelve means that the text below states 'one is made into six', meaning that the mind element is opened into six consciousnesses, collectively forming the mind element. The former accords with the conventional truth principles of the Hīnayāna and so forth; whereas in the Mahāyāna, there are inherently the seventh and eighth consciousnesses which constitute the mind element, and their substances are both real. If so, since the tangible element is nominal, why is it not discussed? Here we take the subject and object without explaining it. Furthermore, excluding the tangible element, this is nominally existent. The text below says 'one is made into six' and so forth to explain the reason for twelve.
