Regarding 'Question: How many are bound only to the desire and form realms? Answer: Eleven': these are the five faculties, three consciousnesses, and three dusts, because smell, taste, and their consciousnesses belong only to the desire realm. In the category of appropriated and non-appropriated: in terms of the definitive truth of the Mahāyāna, only the eighth [consciousness] is called the grasper; in terms of the conforming rational approach, it applies to all six consciousnesses. Now, looking at the drift of the text below, which says, 'Because apart from that, no other grasper can be found,' this is the conforming rational approach. The sound element is not separate from the faculty and is constant, so it is called appropriated; sound as an āyatana exists but is not continuous, which is why it is not discussed. Here we take its element. As for the claim by some that the eighth consciousness does not take sound as a cognitive object: this is as explained elsewhere in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya Commentary* and other texts.
