[Kuai]ji says: In the ultimate truth of the Mahāyāna, only the eighth [consciousness] is named the appropriator. If following the method of conventional reasoning, this extends through the six consciousnesses. Now, the drift of the text below states: 'Because apart from those, no other appropriator is found in matter'—this accords with the method of conventional reasoning. Because the sound element is not separated from the faculties and constantly exists, it is called appropriated. Because sound as an āyatana does not constantly exist, it is not discussed [as such]. Here we take the element. As for the claim that the eighth consciousness does not take sound as an object: this is differentiated elsewhere.
