'Fourteen faculties subsume the three groups of sentient beings' means excluding faith and the other seven (eight in total), because these are exclusively wholesome. 'A small portion of the external āyatanas' refers to the five sense objects that assist the physical faculties, as well as the mental factors of the dharmāyatana, which is why it is called 'a small portion'. 'Subsumed by five faculties' means that the five feelings and the three feelings mutually subsume one another; thus they are not subsumed within the factors of awakening. 'Either four or six' is because speech, action, and livelihood are combined into one; thus four are opened into six. In accordance with this text, right thought (samyak-saṃkalpa), although initiating the preparatory application of speech, is not search (vitarka) as in the Hīnayāna; here, taking its underlying prajñā according to its essence, it is subsumed by the prajñā faculty. In the mutual subsumption between the five faculties beginning with faith and the three taintless faculties, the three taintless ones are broader, while the five beginning with faith are narrower.
