The sixteen intentions have desire (chanda) and resolute determination (adhimokṣa) as their substantial nature; that is, they are aspiration (āśaya). Second, 'estrangement': this is revulsion toward saṃsāra, being estranged from saṃsāra. Third, encouraging toward the path and inspiring the mind. Fourth, the stage of the aids to liberation (mokṣa-bhāgīya). Fifth, the stage of the aids to penetration (nirvedha-bhāgīya). Sixth, causing one to enter the path of seeing. Seventh, directly entering the path of seeing. Eighth, attaining the fruit and maturing. Ninth, having attained the fruit, cultivating concentration. Tenth, causing one to attain the fruit of an aśaikṣa. Eleventh, the Buddha's special intention to lead the assembly to enter gradually, as in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha. Twelfth, causing one to realize the aforementioned special intention and generate joy. The subsequent ones can be understood.
