In the second restatement: transmigration (pravṛtti) is the cause of cyclic existence, which has the pleasant, the unpleasant, and the augmenting; cessation (nivṛtti) refers to the supramundane, which also has the pleasant and the augmenting. The pleasant and unpleasant are causes of the factors of existence; the augmenting is the nominal cause, because it is augmented by the factors of existence. Alternatively, what was previously non-existent and is now existent is called pleasant or unpleasant; what was previously existent and now encounters perfuming is called the augmenting cause.
