Regarding the "seven stations of consciousness", the eighth fascicle of the Kośa says: difference in body and difference in perception; difference in body with identical perception; the reverse of this, identity in body and perception; plus the three formless ones, make seven stations of consciousness; the rest are not, due to impairment. 1. Sentient beings with form having different bodies and different perceptions, such as humans, desire-realm devas, and the first dhyāna, except at the beginning of an eon; 2. different bodies and identical perception, such as the Brahmakāyika devas at the beginning of an eon; 3. identical body and different perceptions, such as in the second dhyāna, becoming weary of fundamental joy and entering access equanimity, or becoming weary of access equanimity and entering fundamental joy; 4. identical body and identical perception, such as in the third dhyāna. In the first dhyāna, through defiled perception, it is called identical perception; in the second dhyāna, through two wholesome perceptions, it is called different perceptions; in the third dhyāna, through fruition perception, it is called identical, because wholesome joy involves agitation. The remaining three are the lower three formless [realms]. Elsewhere, consciousness is impaired, so they are not called stations of consciousness.
