In the fifth section of the bhūmi, on the co-arising of afflictions and defilements, there are two parts: first, explaining the three defilements; second, explaining the abandonment of the three defilements and the cultivation of the six direct realizations (abhisamaya). In the first, there are again two parts: first, a brief question and answer; second, a detailed question and answer. In the answer, there are again two parts: first, listing the three defilements; second, explaining them individually. Afflictive defilement has three parts: first, the question; second, a brief answer in nine headings; third, the individual explanations. "Defilement" means being mingled with taint. Taint means affliction. Whether by association (saṃprayukta), by binding through objects (ālambana-bandhana), by co-arising (samutthāna), by intervening arising (vyavadhāna), or by co-occurrence (sahabhū)—these are called defilements. Afflictions possess all five; wholesome karma possesses four, excluding association; birth possesses the latter three. They possess them as appropriate, hence they are called defilements.
