"Intrinsic nature" refers to the substance of affliction. Fascicle Six of the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* states: unquietness is the common characteristic of all afflictions. Here, in speaking of intrinsic nature: because it pervades all afflictions, it is called a common characteristic, while the substance of each individual dharma is called its intrinsic nature. Or, in contrast to non-afflictions, it is an individual characteristic; when afflictions are contrasted with each other, it is a common characteristic. The points of comparison differ, so there is no contradiction.
