Regarding 'meaning intense characteristics and especially heavy characteristics' among the upper grade of defilements: this corresponds to what was formerly called sharp and persistent; because tenaciously clinging without abandoning is termed especially heavy. Being purely intense, purely especially heavy, or both, are all of the upper grade. Alternatively, this takes only both together, not arising singularly. Regarding 'because of continuity, meaning those of greedy disposition and so forth whose faculties have matured, those in the prime of youth, and those devoid of the quality of nirvāṇa': those of greedy disposition, angry disposition, deluded disposition, and equal-measure disposition whose faculties have matured are called the continuity of defilements. In what bodies do they arise? They arise in the bodies of those in the prime of youth and those devoid of the quality of nirvāṇa. Regarding 'due to matters': defilements arising on the basis of three kinds of matters are called characteristics of the upper grade. Regarding 'due to culmination': they are culminatingly destroyed by the initial noble path.
