Among the seven perversions, 'perversion of conception' takes as its essential nature the mental factor of conception, which is the false conceptualization that arises regarding the four objects. Fascicle 53 says: Foolish ordinary beings have no understanding; following ignorance, they give rise to improper attention (ayoniso manaskāra), and toward the objective support, they conceptualize the impermanent and so forth as permanent and so forth, grasping characteristics and operating—this is called the perversion of conception; thus it takes conception as its essential nature.
