13. The five faults: first, self-view as the root; based on this arise the three: eternalism and nihilism regarding the three time periods, along with wrong view; within the sixty-two views, in accordance with what is appropriate, eternalist and nihilist views as well as wrong view arise conditioning the three time periods. The fifth is holding firmly and fiercely to these views, grasping them as superior, fearing nirvāṇa, and failing to attain it in the present—which is view-grasping (dṛṣṭi-parāmarśa), or the five theories of nirvāṇa in the present life among wrong views. These five faults refer to giving rise to four views, excluding only the adherence to rules and rituals (śīlavrata-parāmarśa).
