Among the four characteristics of the field of inner knowledge (adhyātma-vidyā), the third major section clarifies the characteristics subsumed under the meaning of the noble teaching, in which there are ten dharmas in five pairs: first, that which can act and that which is acted upon, both being wholesome dharmas; next, faults and defilements, which are the dharmas of the truths of suffering and origin; third, that which has hindrances and that which conforms, meaning afflictions and wholesome dharmas; fourth, that which is real and that which is supreme, meaning unconditioned and conditioned uncontaminated dharmas; fifth, that which conforms and that which attains, meaning mundane and supramundane dharmas. "What should be practiced" refers to wholesome dharmas. "What should be severed" refers to defiled dharmas. "What continues to function after being severed" refers to non-obscured morally neutral dharmas.
