The three fetters are taught based on the lower portion of the path of seeing, because one does not transcend the evil destinies. Extreme views follow the view of the transitory collection, adherence to views follows adherence to rules and rituals, and wrong views arise following doubt; therefore, stating the three root ones subsumes the six derivative ones. The aspect of delusion applies throughout the three realms, while anger and greed are predominant in the desire realm; merely speaking of greed and hostility subsumes delusion, because one does not transcend the lower realm. Hence, only five are stated as the fetters belonging to the lower portion. Furthermore, due to the view of the transitory collection one does not advance toward liberation; due to adherence to rules and rituals one is confused about the right and advances on the wrong path; due to doubt one doubts the right path; therefore, with respect to obstacles to liberation, only the first three are stated as the causes of the evil destinies.
