Among the five fetters belonging to the higher portion, "undifferentiated fetters" are called undifferentiated because the fetters are distinguished based on the realms and not based on persons; the other three kinds are called differentiated because the fetters are distinguished based on persons. One who attains dhyāna is a person. Due to attachment, restlessness arises; due to the conceit "I am," other conceits arise; due to doubt, ignorance increases. These are called differentiated fetters. Through the undifferentiated fetters, one grasps rebirth in the higher portion; through the differentiated fetters, one does not abandon rebirth in the higher portion. For one who has attained dhyāna, there are distinctions because of these three afflictions; they are all abandoned by cultivation. Therefore, excluding adherence to views, delusion is spoken of without doubt, because it is abandoned by arhats.
