The treatise says: "Precisely through gradually cultivating these faculties and powers and so forth, one is then able to generate the superior, middling, and inferior aids to penetration," and so forth. Regarding the faculties and powers here, according to the Madhyāntavibhāga-śāstra, the faculties are at [the levels of] heat and summits, and the powers are at the latter two stages. Now it says that precisely through these faculties and powers one generates the aids to penetration: these faculties and powers are specific, whereas the aids to penetration are general, and because the specific generates the general, it is called 'generating.' They are simultaneous, not generated successively at different times, which is why it is called 'initiating.' As for those who maintain that there is the undefiled prior to the path of seeing, as the treatise states immediately below, distinctively through the faculties and powers without interval, the supramundane, undefiled noble dharma is generated; therefore we know that prior to this it is defiled, and it cannot be called undefiled.
