Where the treatise says, "If previously already obtained but not yet brought to manifest presence, merely by cultivating dharmas of that kind, one will cause it to manifest before one, causing it to arise increasingly pure and bright, which is called purified through cultivation": this means that at the time of the wisdom of phenomena, because the seeds of its subsequent wisdom are also accomplished, it is called 'previously already obtained'. Because when cultivating those seeds of the wisdom of phenomena, one assists the dharmas of seeds of that kind of wisdom, by the time of the subsequent wisdom, these seeds are capable of generating subsequent wisdom, causing it to arise increasingly pure and bright, which is called 'purified through cultivation'. That is, at the time of the wisdom of phenomena, cultivating the seeds of subsequent wisdom makes them pure, and further generates subsequent wisdom. Furthermore, it is like perfuming and increasing the untainted seeds prior to the path of seeing, so that upon entering the path of seeing, the wisdom of phenomena and so forth are generated. Furthermore, the accomplishment of seeds is called 'obtained through cultivation'; the maturation of manifest activity is called 'practised through cultivation'; and the maturation of mastery is called 'purified through cultivation': these are the three maturations. If already arisen afflictions can be severed, it is called 'dispelled through cultivation'; if unarisen afflictions can be kept from arising, comprehending them as like an illness and so forth, it is called 'known through cultivation'.
